About us

We are a grassroots foundation that is built by love to protect and thrive the land of Papua.

Formerly known as the ‘Mata Hati’ Foundation, Ecoducation Atap Langit was born in 2007, from the harsh reality that many Papuan children face considerable challenges in the pursuit of education. Formal education in Indonesia has always been centralized in big cities such as Jakarta, leaving many children from villages feeling inferior. Through the Reading Houses Programme, the Atap Langit foundation has provided books, reading spaces and free learning sessions to children all over Papua.

The Atap Langit Foundation has taken great lengths to not only provide free education but also protect Papua’s paradise islands of Raja Ampat from exploitation and environmental degradation. By establishing the the Blue Carbon Village in Raja Ampat, we hope to conserve mangrove ecosystems and support the wellbeing of Indigenous people. The Blue Carbon Village is a manifestation of the ‘Atap Langit’ concept in which there is no rooftop or ceiling that separates people — and that everyone is a student. There are many things we can learn even from indigenous people who never received formal education but are able to swim, fish and navigate the waters.

All in all, we believe that in order to overcome climate change and save the environment, we must work together and combine our efforts starting with ourselves and what we can give back to the environment we live in.
